Rule #1, Don’t become the news.. except

Humanitarian first, photojournalist second!

Last week I broke one of the cardinal rules of journalism, “Don’t become the news”.

I found myself in a weird position and I thought I would share that with all of you. I was setting up for my 6pm live-shot on Wednesday September 1st, covering the impact of Hurricane Ida when I noticed a small silver car heading for a flooded road with fast moving water. The car didn’t stop and was quickly disabled, floating helplessly.

I knew I had to do something, time to fall back onto my training! The two teens inside were freaking out, I could hear them screaming! I inadvertent rolled on all of this from the time they submarined the car to me helping them to climbing out of the sunroof and to safety.

I didn’t think much of it but my reporter told me she definitely wanted to use the video in our PAK.

6ABC WPVI, my station WFMZ and CNN all aired clips of me jumping into action ?. 20+ years of fire / rescue training kicked in! Oh and I didn’t miss slot 🙂 Don’t be a bystander, do something! #safety#hurricane
